i'm happy, hope you're happy too

and also very lazy, here’s an excerpt from an email i just sent to a friend:

Although I did fetch my Baudelaires up out of the Naughty WIPs Basket again — I had to rip out what I had (about half) of the heel because I’d obviously lost my place a couple times running, and I couldn’t fudge it enough to make sense, so I just ripped it, but … I SWEAR I am going to find the author of this pattern and punish her somehow. I just tried on the second sock, I should take a picture… OK:

Floppy sock

So yesterday I had just finished the heel and started up again with the pattern to come up the ankle, and I was feeling pretty good about it, except then I noticed it looked like the foot was maybe a little long. So I’m glad I decided to try it on just now. Which is good. I would have been pretty irritated if I had had to rip out the heel (AGAIN) plus several inches of ankle.

Honestly. The pattern says to start the heel 4″ from the back of the foot. I just got my ruler and measured this. It’s 4-3/4 inches long from the start of the increases! Nobody’s foot is this big! Bigfoot’s foot isn’t this big. I’ve got like an extra 1-1/2 inches hanging off my toe in that photo, and that’s not even stretched at all. And I’ve got gauge. So I’m going to rip out the whole heel plus, like, five pattern repeats. Maybe I should just rip out both socks and use this yarn in another pattern, just to avoid the resentment. Oh my god.

If I ever write a sock pattern, I’m writing down how damn many rows to knit. None of this “four inches before you think where it should go” nonsense. Jeeeez.

Garnprinzessin: I don’t know why I can’t knit this! Apparently I am just broken. The lace pattern is the easy part. The, like, actual SOCK is the hard part.

I think I am going to call it a day, and rip these babies out. I haven’t knitted on another pair of socks since I started them, and that was in, like, June — I remember I was knitting on one of them when we tailgated for the Sox/Orioles game, which was early July, IIRC. These socks went to quite a few Sox games this year, by virtue of having to get constantly ripped back and reknitted. Maybe the problem here is that not only did the Sox bullpen blow every opportunity they got, but my socks blew it too. Oh, bad puns. That’s a sign I have to call this blog post done… Anyways. Maybe I’ll rip them out tonight after French class, and wind up some new yarn after that. I’ve been collecting piles of sock yarn that I haven’t touched (since I’m a one-sock-at-a-time kind of girl) and my orange sherbet colored stuff has been calling my name since I bought it, at Nina, months and months and months ago. I bought it before I cast on the haunted Baudelaires, actually. Maybe it can be official consolation prize sock yarn…

the silly thing about spending a bunch of quality time discussing preferred covers of leonard cohen’s ‘hallelujah’ and contemplating building a playlist of nothing but them is when you do that but aren’t actually already depressed enough to listen to ‘hallelujah’ a dozen times. of course once you listen to them all you are!

stupid jeff buckley.
