A friend of mine from work told me that the background I use one these
pages -- the bubbles image (which is actually a background from my
iMac at home) -- is annoying. Anyone else think so? I always thought
it was kind of cute, myself... :)
That same friend told me that I'm writing in old HTML -- not up to the
newest standards. Sigh. Why can't they leave anything the same long
enough for me to get it all figured out?
Over the weekend I made three batches of soap. I was pretty proud of
myself, because I literally hadn't made any soaps for probably a whole
month. Just with the job change and being incredibly behind on email,
plus I have the milk soaps swap that's been delayed like 2 weeks still
in my house.. I guess I just haven't felt like it. I mean, I kind of
did -- especially when I got in some wonderful Stargazer Lily FO that
smells *just* like the flowers (which are *gorgeous*), I was dying
to make some soap with it. I powdered some peppermint herb and infused
some oil to make my peppermint foot scrubby soap, which I'm running out
of. Just never got around to it. The kitchen was a mess, or there was
laundry to do, or something else. Steve threw out the peppermint infused
almond oil after like two weeks of it sitting on the counter, which was
depressing because there went half a pound of perfectly good oil.
I don't know why I was so lethargic. I eventually cleaned up the back
porch a bit -- it's still a mess, but at least we can make it from one
door to the other now -- and this weekend I made some more soap.
Yay! :)
OK, so I made three batches. They are:
- Peppermint Foot Scrubby Soap II
- Hempseed and Cocoa Butter with Bitter Almond
- Hempseed and Goatsmilk with Sweet Orange II
The peppermint foot scrubby soap I made the first time I liked a lot, but
it had lots of deep green lather which tended to leave greenish soap scum
on our white tiled bathtub. It was also quite soft and tended to squish
a bit. So I made a new recipe for it:
Peppermint Foot Scrubby Soap II
- 12 fluid ounces distilled water
- 5.3 ounces (by weight) NaOH
- 1.5 tsp. NaCl (non-iodized sea salt)
- 1.5 tsp. table sugar
I dissolved the salt and sugar in the water in a beaker -- I admit it,
it looks geeky, but I like using the beakers, besides they're just as
cheap and more versatile than the measuring cups -- and let it sit for
a while. Dissolved the lye in the solution and let it cool.
Melt together:
- 10 ounces (wt) Palm Oil
- 10 ounces (wt) Palm Kernel Oil
- 4 ounces (wt) Cocoa Butter
- 4 ounces (wt) Hempseed Oil
- 4 ounces (wt) Sweet Almond Oil
Measure and set out:
- 4 ounces (wt) Mango Butter, melted
- 1.0 ounces (wt) Deb Schuman's Peppermint EO
- 0.2 ounce or about 1 heaping tbsp. powdered peppermint herb
- 0.4 ounce or about 2 tbsp. fine corn meal, crushed further in mortar and pestle
Mix melted base oils and lye solution until trace. At trace, blend in
the melted mango butter, peppermint, and corn meal. When that's all
mixed in, add the peppermint EO. At a thick trace -- so the peppermint
herb stays evenly distributed -- pour the mixture into a mold. This
batch fills half of Barry's mold for me.

Hempseed and Cocoa Butter with Bitter Almond
Dissolve together and let cool:
- 12 fluid ounces distilled water
- 5.3 oz wt. Sodium Hydroxide
- 2.5 tsp NaCl
- 2.5 tsp sugar
Melt together:
- 8 oz wt. Cocoa Butter
- 8 oz wt. Hempseed oil
- 10 oz wt. Palm oil
- 10 oz wt. Palm Kernel oil
At trace, add:
- 4 oz wt Mango Butter (melted)
- 1 oz Bitter Almond FO
Upon reflection, this is a really smooth bar. Next time I might
add some powdered oatmeal or something to give it a little more texture.
Of course, I like texture.. YMMV. :)

Sweet Orange & Hempseed GMS II
Dissolve together and let cool:
- 6.3 oz wt. Sodium Hydroxide
- 15 fl oz distilled water
- 3 tsp NaCl
- 3 tsp. sugar
Melt together:
- 18 oz wt. Hempseed oil
- 12 oz wt. Palm oil
- 12 oz wt. Palm Kernel oil
Measure and set aside:
- 3 oz wt. Powdered goatsmilk
At trace, add:
- 2 oz wt. Shea butter
- 4 oz wt. Sweet Almond oil
- 3 oz wt. Sweet Orange EO
Ok, now I know you're asking... so where's the goats milk? Here it is!
:) I slowly added the lye to chilled water/sugar/salt solution, then
put it in the freezer until chilly. Then I put the powdered goatsmilk
into another container, and sloooowly added lye-solution to the goatsmilk
to avoid lumps and other nasties. Turned into a really thick liquid.
Then I integrated that into the oils and blended until trace. It
resulted in nice beige bars, instead of the tan bars I got last time
I did hempseed GMS.

OK, my left wrist is killing me... Done with this diary entry! :)
