the silly thing about spending a bunch of quality time discussing preferred covers of leonard cohen’s ‘hallelujah’ and contemplating building a playlist of nothing but them is when you do that but aren’t actually already depressed enough to listen to ‘hallelujah’ a dozen times. of course once you listen to them all you are!

hm. have been running around (as usual) lately, but:

1) Still working on the sysadmin blog. It turns out, it takes time to come up with that style of blog entry — way more time than slapping up a quick link and complaining about people maligning britney spears. who knew? am contemplating asking other people to contribute. i still think a sysadmin blog would be a neat idea, but i no longer thing i am up to the task of 2 full length articles a week. so, for now, back burner.
2) Have been reading Dr. Housing Bubble lately. i appreciate the reality check, vs. people telling me that a mortgage is a “forced savings plan” (yeah, one with a $10-$15k upfront nonrefundable fee, plus one where you’re not earning interest, someone else is) and irritating guilt trips over renting. i like renting! renting is perfectly workable for me. i may eventually buy a place, but it’s certainly not going to be in this market, and it’s certainly not going to cost me 50% of my net income. that shit is insane.
3) Got the new Kanye West album yesterday. *thumbs up* did maybe feel a little out of place, being a white chick in a volkswagen, windows down and radio up, driving around Woodlawn and 97th, yesterday. oh well. life’s rough like that sometimes.
4) I’m still pretty hot over the transit funding situation. Apparently now G-Rod is trying to be all save-the-day and ride his magical unicorn in with a bucket of cash (Sun-Times) and is actually pissed off that the transit boards are not falling at his feet in gratitude. “I would say that they should not look a gift horse in the mouth … it seems to me, pretty ungrateful if they turn down this help.” I can actually agree with Judy Baar Topinka on this one: “[T]his is just a payday loan.” It’s not a solution! You are waving your Discover Card at the CTA in hopes we’ll all shut up bitching! Maybe you should quit trying to kill bills that would raise actual money to fund our transit, like more than a couple of weeks’ worth of cash, if you want us to shut up! Arrrrgh! I am so sorry I ever voted for you. The only thing you’ve done I still approve of is the pharmacy emergency contraception mandatory distribution, and frankly, I could have gotten that from a lot of people.
5) Stupid transit. I’m driving to work today, and just thinking about this situation is about to make me late getting ready for work.

about the only thing keeping me going these past few days is pop music. not, like, sensible pop music, like pet shop boys. mindless cotton-candy pop music. britney spears’ greatest hits. i even listened to a bunch of billie piper and if that’s not straight out of a 12-year old girl’s diary i don’t know what is. i actually, in the end, was forced to come to the conclusion that i do not actually have enough cotton-candy pop music in my collection. this comes of, i think, being sadly much older than 12. (OTOH, i’m old enough to drink beer, so maybe it’s an OK tradeoff after all.)

now, if you’ll excuse me, i have to go dance around my kitchen and sing “Toxic” while putting away the groceries.

i think it’s quite fair to say that arcade fire rocked the everlasting shit out of the chicago theatre this evening. two hours! exuberance! clapping! shouting into megaphones! it was the very best kind of madness.

also: the performance really served to underline, boldface, add exclamation points to what an excellent album Funeral is.

man oh man, that was a good show.

much email to read! so much mail, not even gonna try until like tomorrow.
return trip: 4 h 50 m from brunswick, ohio, to the stony island exit ramp off of the skyway. oh yeah.
only 680 miles in toto; avg speed 67 mph; car got poor mileage both ways. :( 29 mpg there, 27 (!!) mpg back. still unhappy about the mileage situation, though i think the extreme shittiness on the way home was because we had some really harsh cross winds and i was fighting it the whole drive. (also i kinda leadfooted maybe a wee little bit.)
made it to the modest mouse show after all!! i emailed the ticket shipper and whined a lot, and she had duplicate tickets printed and held at will call for me. yay! also, yay! realizing i forgot my wallet before i got to the show. boo realizing it after i’d already pulled into the parking deck, gotten the valet parking stub, and walked away. (yay not getting busted for speeding without a driver’s license while racing back home to get wallet and return to show.) show was insane with the awesome. not to mention THE TENTH ROW CENTER seats (which i did not realize — since i did not have the tickets in hand, and had gotten no notification of what the location was beforehand). also, the auditorium theatre remains one of my very favorite venues.
learned to crochet. can now start my ripple! ripple afghans for EVERYBODY!
also, carded wool for the first time. now want a drum carder. at $500 a pop, this: not going to happen any time soon. alas.
won spectacular things at gathering. one got adopted out to its rightful mom; the other is MINE MINE MINE and i will photograph it soonishly so all may see how completely freaking gorgeous it is, and be envious of its MINEness.
am probably going to make soap this week. if anyone needs any soap, let me know. i have, you know, like 500000 bars of it. TAKE SOME NICE SOAP. IT IS HAPPY SOAP. as always: will send box of soap to a good home, just send me your address!

okay, time for falling down, going boom now. am exhausted!
